LAUREL, MS – March 1, 2026: In a weekend defined by elite shot-making and spirited camaraderie, the amateurs of the Mississippi Golf Association emerged victorious over the Mississippi Chapter PGA to claim the 2026 W.E. Morgan Mississippi Cup.
The two-day, Ryder Cup-style competition kicked off Saturday morning at Laurel Country Club under superb, warm conditions. The opening Four-ball session saw both sides trading blows, ending in a deadlocked 3–3 tie. However, the MGA found its stride during the afternoon Foursomes. Behind a surge on the back nine, the amateurs won the afternoon session to take a 8–4 lead heading into Sunday. Between rounds, players gathered at The Loft, hosted by local golfer Jon Diggets, for the traditional pairings party. The evening provided a lively stage for the “call-outs,” as players hand-selected their opponents for the final day of play.
Sunday brought another beautiful day of weather and 12 Singles matches. Despite a valiant effort from the Mississippi Chapter PGA professionals, the MGA maintained its momentum. By the time the final putt dropped, the MGA had won the cup with a final score of 16-8. “It was a great two days of sportsmanship and camaraderie between the Gulf States PGA professionals and the MGA amateurs,” said Captain Rory Nelson, PGA. “But make no mistake—the GSPGA team will be back next year, ready to take that cup back.”
The 2026 W.E. Morgan Cup further cements the storied rivalry and mutual respect between the state’s top-tier amateurs and its dedicated club professionals.
The Gulf States PGA would like to thank everyone involved in this year’s event, including Andy Loving, PGA, & Jeff Trecost, PGA, at Laurel Country Club, Blake Hatfield, PGA, with Cutter & Buck, Jon Diggets with The Loft, and Carter Page, Adam Smith, and Chandler Thornwill with the Mississippi Golf Association.
We look forward to seeing you at our next event, the GSPGA Teaching & Coaching Summit at Beau Chene CC on March 16th & the tasc Pro-Am at Mossy Oak on March 30th.
