Tunica, MS: Despite the threat of rain hanging over the city for the past two days, the Gulf States PGA Professional Championship held at Tunica National Golf & Tennis had a great turnout. 34 members signed up to compete for 4 qualifying and 3 alternate spots.

After an hour-long rain delay on Monday, Greg Sonnier from Lake Charles CC, (70-72–142) and Kyle Ramey from Canebrake CC, (70-74–144) were tied for the first position with 2-under-par. On Tuesday, Greg, Nick Bailes from Annandale GC, (73-71–144) Kyle, and Reg Adams from Huntington Park GC, (72-73–145) took the qualifiers.

Nick Ellison from Bayou DeSiard CC, (76-70–146) Bradley Petashnick from New Orleans CC, (76-70–146) and Joseph Hanko from Elm Lake GC, (75-71–146) took the alternate spots respectively after a 2-hole playoff.

Many thanks to Omega, Club Car, Ladds, Golf Cars of Louisiana, Titleist, Taylor Made, Nike, PGA Tour, and Golf Channel for sponsoring this event. We also appreciate all of the support from Bob Wolcott, PGA and Jason Lloyd as well as the food, beverage, and maintenance staff.

Following his play, Reg noted, “I think my strength was just being patient and persistent. When you make a few bad swings over 36 holes, you just hope they don’t cost you too much. Made a few putts, missed a few putts, so when I get home, I’m going to the putting green, I’ve got to practice my putting.”

Nick Bailes was a first-time contender at a Professional Championship for the Gulf States, and he remarked, “Everything was average, nothing was bad, and I just kind of grinded it out. Birdied 16, birdied 17, hadn’t made anything all day, really just putted poorly. But I had a nice 2-putt on 18 just to seal the deal.”

We look forward to seeing all of our professionals at our next event, the National Car Rental Gulf States Assistants PGA Professional Championship at Grand Bear Golf Club, September 8th – 9th, 2020.
