Gautier, MS: The Gulf States PGA Senior Championship and Senior PGA Professional Championship Qualifying experienced torrential rainfalls during Round 1 play on Monday. The golf course became unplayable and the event was shortened to 18 holes, played on Tuesday. Twenty-five Senior PGA members enjoyed sunshine and drier conditions and were able to complete the event on July 28th. High humidity and soggy conditions played a big factor in the results of the competition.

Gulf States PGA Senior Champion, Reg Adams, claimed low qualifier for the Senior PGA Professional Championship with 3-under-par 69 as well. Reed Hughes also qualified for the Professional Championship with a score of 1-under-par 71. Jerry Covich took Super Senior honors with 4-under 68. Jerry also placed first in the putting contest that followed the round. A number of very competitive scores were posted under extreme playing conditions. Reg commented, “Considering the rainfall they’ve had in the past 4-5 days they’ve done a fantastic job.” The Shell Landing maintenance staff had the golf course in fantastic shape after five inches of rain in the previous days.

Following Reg’s round, he expressed, “I feel very honored to represent our Section as the 2020 Senior Champion.” When asked if he had been practicing recently, he responded, “No. That’s what’s embarrassing. I’ve been working 80 hours a week. I came to the tournament not wanting to embarrass myself.”

Reg also wanted to thank our sponsors: Yamaha Golf Car, Cadillac, John Deere, Golf Channel, and the PGA Tour. Also, many thanks to the Shell Landing PGA Owner Kenny Hughes, PGA Head Professional Jerry Covich, PGA Associate Jon-Michael Davidson and Golf Course Superintendent Jeremy Ely (eelee).

We wish Reg and Reed best of luck as they move on to the Senior PGA Professional Championship, October 15-18 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Our next events will be the combined Mississippi PGA Championship and Louisiana PGA Championship to be held at Windance Country Club on August 10-11. We’d like to remind you that these events now allow PGA associates who have completed Level 1 to participate. Register today at our 2020 schedule!
