Zachary, LA: The team of Dustin Diez, PGA, Baton Rouge Country Club/Clay Weems, PGA, Frenchman’s Bend Golf & Health Club, has earned the honor of being named the 2022 Gulf States PGA Senior/Junior Pro-Pro Champions. The team finished with a score of nine-under, 63. This year’s event was held at Beaver Creek Golf Club on Monday, March 7th.
Thirty-five players gathered on a windy day for golf, forming eighteen teams. The teams were formed by a PGA Professional 50 years of age and older and a PGA Professional 49 years of age and younger. The tournament format was a front nine best ball and back nine scramble. Finishing in a three-way-tie for second with a score of seven-under, 65, were the teams of Kyle Ellis, from the Country Club of Oxford/Reed Hughes, PGA, from Senatobia, MS, David Lee, PGA, from 1.50 Golf/Allan Martel, PGA, from Grand Bear Golf Club, and Blaine Patin, PGA, from Country Club of Louisiana/Brian Williams, PGA, from Country Club of Louisiana.
In a dual-interview after the round, Dustin commented, “We played last year and we brother-in-lawed pretty well. Tied for runner-up last year so we had to come back and try to win it.” Clay added, “We started off pretty good. Birdied 3 of the first 4. Took care of the par 5’s. When it kind of came push comes to shove, Dustin chipped in on a par 3 that kind of gave us a lead and we just kind of smoothed it on in from there.”
The Gulf States PGA wishes to thank sponsor Kelly Welsh of Oakley for the Closest to the Hole prizes.
The Section also wishes to thank the entire staff at Beaver Creek Golf Club including Tom Agazzi, PGA, Head Golf Professional and Jacob Buchanan, Head Golf Course Superintendent.
We hope you’ll join us for our next tournament, the ANTIGUA/Lorente/Yamaha Pro-Pro on April 25th at Ellendale Country Club.
