METAIRIE, La. – Joining forces to compete as a team turned out extremely well for PGA Professionals Derek Sanders and Reed Hughes as they successfully set out to win the Gulf States PGA Bushnell Pro-Pro Championship presented by Sun Mountain Sports. This year’s tournament was held at The Preserve Golf Club in Vancleave, Miss. on Tuesday, November 27 and Wednesday, November 28.
Gulf States PGA Life Member Reed Hughes said partnering with Derek Sanders, AHEAD Golf Sales Representative, was a nice change from competing against him in tournaments. The duo finished with a two-day total of 128 (64-64) and earned $950.00 for their victorious efforts.
“We brother-in-lawed it pretty good,” said Hughes about his team’s performance. “When he was off, I was on. When I was off, he was on. We were zigging and zagging but it worked out for the best.
“It was looking like we were going to let somebody catch us on the second day,” said Hughes. “We had only made three birdies through thirteen holes. We picked it up at the end and just waited to see what would happen.”
Sanders agreed that their steady play during the two days kept them on the path to victory.
“We didn’t do anything out of the ordinary,” said Sanders. “We didn’t get on a roll. We just hit the ball in the right places and capitalized on breaking putts.
“We got off to a slow start on the second day,” said Sanders. “Reed played good though; I just rode his coattails all day.”
Finishing three shots behind the leaders at 131 (69-62) was the team of Robbie Gueringer, PGA apprentice at Alexandria Golf & Country Club, and PGA General Manager Craig Campo of Oak Wing Golf Club. David Horton, PGA apprentice at Beau Chene Country Club, and Stephan Barr, PGA closed out the top three shooting 134 (70-64).
Introduced to the tournament schedule in 2011, in the Section Pro-Pro Championship members form a two-man team to compete in a scramble format during the first day of the event followed by best ball on the final day.
The Gulf States PGA Section thanks Josh Lampley of Bushnell and Sun Mountain Sports for his sponsorship and support of the Section. The players greatly enjoyed the par 3 closest-to-the-hole prizes. The Section also thanks Chris Champagne, PGA and his staff at The Preserve Golf Club for all their hard work in putting on a first-class event.
