Palmer Closes with 69 to Claim the 43rd Trustmark Invitational Title
Oxford, Miss. — (July 17, 2016) – Damon Palmer of Tupelo won the 2016 Trustmark Invitational with a three-day total of 12-under par 204 at the Country Club of Oxford. This was the first time the club hosted this event. The tournament, which showcases a field of the state’s top PGA professionals and amateurs, paid a total purse of $20,500.
Palmer deserves to be proud for many reasons this weekend, including breaking the course record with his second round score of 7-under par 65. His Round 1 score of 2-under par 70 and Round 3 score of 3-under par 69 were also noteworthy. Palmer won by seven shots over Cameron Clarke of Pittsboro. Reflecting on his incredible rounds, Palmer said, “It was one of the greatest experiences as far as golf goes. It was the best performance I have ever had. It was very stressful starting today with the lead. I had a goal in mind to shoot even par or under, and whatever happened would happen. With [today’s round of] 3-under par, I am tickled pink. What a fine golf course. What a fine weekend of golf. It was a fun golf course to play. I am glad to be the Trustmark Invitational Champion and the course record holder.”
Marshall Saxon of Biloxi was awarded the William E. Sonny Lawson Cup, which is given to the Round One Low Professional. Saxon also claimed the PGA Professional Champion title with rounds of 70-72-73 for a three-day total of 1-under par 215.
Additional flight winners were:
1st Flight – Isaiah Jackson of Golden
2nd Flight – Tucker Jenkins of Guntown
3rd Flight – Rhett Walters of Louin
4th Flight – Trenton Myers of Brandon
