METAIRIE, La. – Winning the E-Z-GO Section Championship is not an easy feat. Winning it for a second straight time, for an overall total of five Section Championship victories, can not be described as easy either. That is exactly what Jake Narro, PGA of Oak Knoll Country Club did after he finished two strokes ahead of his competitors with a two-day total score of 138 (68-70). This year’s event was held on Monday, September 24 and Tuesday, September 25 at Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport, La.
Narro, a five-time champion of this event, said that good friend, Derek Sanders, kept him on his toes during the second round as they took turns sharing the lead. He said Sanders, a sales representative for AHEAD, set the pace early on in the second round and got off to a great start, eventually reaching a 1-shot lead over Narro.
“I eagled the eighth hole each day and that’s what got me back on top in the second round,” said Narro. “I managed to hold Derek off from there.
“It was a great match with a great friend,” said Narro. “It sure is better to come out on top.”
Sanders put forth a great effort to close the gap but ended up finishing two strokes behind Narro shooting 140 (70-70).
Narro said that while his ball striking was particularly poor during the second round, his skillful chipping and putting separated him from the competition.
“The greens were smooth and quick,” said Narro. “I got a feel for them immediately. It was a big advantage for me.”
PGA Teaching Professional Tim Yelverton of Old Waverly Golf Club ended the tournament at 2-under to round out the top three at 142 (70-72).
In the Senior Division, PGA Director of Golf Eric Kaspar of Black Bear Golf Club shot 157 (77-80) to seal the victory in this division.
All of the 46 players that made up the field of the 2012 Gulf States PGA E-Z-GO Section Championship were able to experience outstanding course conditions at Southern Trace and participate in a true test of golf
With his win at the Section Championship, Narro has also earned an exemption into the 2013 Zurich Classic of New Orleans being held at TPC Louisiana on April 22-26, 2013.
The Gulf States PGA Section wishes to thank Benji Nelson with Ben Nelson Golf and Utility Vehicles and E-Z-GO for their tremendous support for this tournament and the Gulf States PGA, as well as the PGA TOUR for their supporting sponsorship.
