Friday, Jan. 29 on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive in Celebration of the PGA of America’s Centennial
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (Jan. 20, 2016) – The Gulf States PGA Section and its work with the Bayou District Foundation reviving junior golf instruction and rebuilding the City Park Golf Complex will be spotlighted on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive program on Friday, Jan. 29, in celebration of the PGA of America’s Centennial.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, junior golf programs and instruction in the Bayou District came to halt. In 2008, the Gulf States PGA Section partnered with the Bayou District Foundation to reestablish junior golf instruction in the area through the First Tee of Greater New Orleans along with other similar programming. Celebrating a successful relaunch of programs, which was bolstered by a $10,000 donation from the PGA of America, led to a new goal of revitalizing the City Park Golf Complex and making it the new home of the Gulf States PGA Section office and Hall of Fame Museum.
The complex will feature two, 18-hole courses when completed in November – a new Rees Jones-designed championship course and the rebuilt North Course geared towards juniors, seniors and families. In addition to creating over 40 jobs for the community, residents of the surrounding neighborhoods in the Bayou District can enjoy the facility and its dedicated programming to provide economically disadvantaged kids the opportunity to learn and play the game of golf.
In celebration of its Centennial, the PGA of America has partnered with Golf Channel to shine a spotlight on all 41 PGA Sections, and their featured programs and initiatives nationwide, led by PGA Professionals. The PGA Section Spotlights are scheduled to air on Golf Channel from Jan. 27–May 4, spanning 100 days in honor of the Centennial.
“In celebrating our Centennial, we want to honor our 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals in all PGA Sections across the country,” said PGA President Derek Sprague. “Each day, they’re growing the game and using golf to better lives in their communities, as evidenced by the work of the Gulf States PGA Section. We’re very proud of these PGA Professionals and look forward to highlighting their efforts this year.”
The spotlights will run in conjunction with the #ThxPGAPro Centennial celebration social media campaign, where golfers everywhere can post videos, photos and messages in support of their favorite PGA Professionals on ThxPGAPro.com or through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The Section Spotlights also will be featured prominently on ThxPGAPro.com.
