METAIRIE, LA – As the summer heats up, male and female junior golfers hope their golf game does too as they prepare for the 2017 Gulf States Junior PGA Championship. The Championship took place at Diamondhead Country Club on Monday, June 12th and Tuesday, June 13th.
The champions will have the opportunity to join 144 of the nation’s top male and female junior golfers in the PGA of America’s premium junior event, the 42nd Boys and Girls Junior PGA Championship, hosted at The Country Club of St. Albans in St. Albans, Missouri. The Country Club of St. Albans has consistently been ranked in the Top 10 courses in the state of Missouri by Golf Digest and looks to be a fantastic venue for the event. The Boys Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 31-August 3, 2017. The Girls Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 18-21, 2017.
This year’s Championship will have twice the field size of previous years. This means each of the 41 PGA of America Sections will receive two invitations per Division. One for Trey Winstead of Baton Rouge, LA, the Gulf States PGA Boys Junior Champion with a two-day total of sixty-five sixty-sixty, one-hundred and thirty-one, thirteen under par and runner up Simms Abney of Madison, MS, received an At-Large Bid out of the Boys Division with a two-day total of sixty-nine seventy-two, one-hundred and forty-one, three under par. For the Girls Division, Abbey Daniel of Covington, LA, Gulf States PGA Girls Junior Champion with a two-day total of seventy-five seventy-one, one-hundred and forty-six, two over par and runner up Brooke Tyree of Sulphur, LA, received an At-Large Bid out of the Girls Division with a two-day total of seventy-six seventy-two, one-hundred and forty-eight, four over par.
The Boys and Girls Junior PGA Championship is where some of the best in the world get their start. Many of today’s PGA Tour professionals made their debut at the Championship. Notable past participants Include: Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Inbee Park, Lexi Thompson, and Cristie Kerr.
