METAIRIE, LA. – Billy Allen, PGA Apprentice from Deerfield Golf Club in Canton, Miss., captures the 2016 National Car Rental Gulf States Assistant PGA Professional Championship in a one-hole playoff. Allen will be representing the Gulf States Section at the 2016 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship, which will be played at PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker course on October 27-30. This year’s Section event was contested at Diamondhead Country Club – Cardinal on September 12-13.
Diamondhead Country Club provided a great test to eight-teen players. The participants felt the heat from the high temperatures on Day-One and rainy conditions on Day-Two, which only added to the pressure to compete for the one spot available to the Section for the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship taking place this fall.
Allen shot scores of 72 and 70 for a total of 2-under 142, which tied PGA Apprentice, Greg Sonnier of Lake Charles Country Club. Allen orchestrated two fabulous shots, which afforded him a tap in birdie on the first playoff hole to take home the title.
Claiming the three alternate spots for the National Championship was PGA Apprentice Greg Sonnier of Lake Charles Country Club, PGA Member Andrew Peyton of Baton Rouge Country Club, and PGA Apprentice Jared Smith of Canebrake Country Club.
The Gulf States PGA would like to thank the entire staff and membership at Diamondhead Country including the Director of Golf and PGA Member Chris Altese for providing the Section with a tremendous setting for this annual event and for their terrific job in hosting us. The Section also thanks the Title Sponsor: National Car Rental and Supporting Sponsors: Cleveland, Srixon, and the PGA Tour. Without their support this event would not be possible.
