METAIRIE, La. – Drew Goff, PGA didn’t let two rain delays prevent him from coming from behind and securing a victory at the Gulf States PGA Professional Championship. Shooting a final-round 68 that would ultimately secure him the Championship title and a place in the 2016 PGA Professional National Championship. This year’s tournament was contested at Contraband Bayou in Lake Charles, La. over August 17-18, 2015.
At the conclusion of day one, fifteen players were within 2 shots. Round two included two rain delays, which halted play for more than two hours.
Goff, PGA assistant professional at New Orleans Country Club, said that despite an three putt on the par-3 eleventh hole, he played well and got off to a good start in the second round with a total of four birdies.
“I felt like I was close to the lead then but wasn’t certain,” said Goff. “I thought I needed to birdie 18.”
“I’d like to thank the Club Car, Omega, and Mercedes-Benz for sponsoring the event and Contraband Bayou for hosting the event. The course was in great condition and was a good test of golf.”
In the end, Goff ‘s final score of 138 (70-68) bettered that of 60 fellow members for the win.
PGA Professionals Tim Yelverton of Old Waverly Golf Club. (70-69—139), Phil Schmitt of Schmitty Golf LLC (70-70—140) and Emlyn Aubrey of Centenary College (70-71—141) will join Goff at the 2016 PGA Professional National Championship. Also representing the Gulf States PGA is Chip Sullivan, who is exempt into the championship for winning the 2008 Professional National Championship.
The 49th PGA Professional National Championship presented by Club Car, Mercedes-Benz and OMEGA will be held at Turning Stone Golf Club in Pennsylvania on June 26-29, 2016.
