METAIRIE, La. – Three teams sat atop the leaderboard at the end of the 2014 Gulf States PGA E-Z-GO Oliver Counce Six-Pro Championship tied at 19-under-53, with the team led by Shell Landing Golf Club’s General Manager Kenny Hughes taking home this year’s trophy. One hundred and eight players competed for the title at the Section’s last tournament of the season hosted by Diamondhead (Miss.) Country Club on December 8, 2014.

Hughes’ victorious team consisted of Jerry Covich, PGA head professional at Hickory Hill Country Club, David Lee, PGA director of golf at Great Southern Golf Club, Russ Bloom, PGA general manager at The Oaks Golf Club, Wade Hamilton, PGA general manager at           Sunkist Country Club and Marshall Saxon, PGA teaching professional at GolfTEC in Metairie. The team combined for a steady stream of birdies highlighted by eagles on the last hole of each leg. The prize money was split between the three teams tied at first.
“Everyone contributed to the team,” said Hughes. “We made a 25 foot putt for eagle, and a second 35 foot putt for eagle; and every putt counts in a scramble format.

“We’ve basically had the same team for the last ten years. I putted last this time around; it adds a lot of pressure. There are too many good players to miss a putt. It makes for an exciting event.”
Hughes said a definite highlight of the event is the abundance of southern cuisine cooked up by recent GSPGA Hall of Fame inductee Mickey Bradley along with his friends. Each year, the players line up for fried turkey, oysters, fried fish and shrimp and jambalaya.
“It’s a fun event,” said Hughes. “It’s our biggest event of the year and has the best attendance. Everybody is there. It really is a gathering for all professionals.”
This annual 18-hole event is played in a scramble format with teams consisting of six professionals. The tournament is named after the late Oliver Counce who served as the Gulf States PGA Section’s first executive director. Counce passed away in 2004.
