NARRO EARNS PLAYOFF VICTORY AT GULF STATES PGA E-Z-GO SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP

METAIRIE, La. –  With three players sitting atop the leaderboard at the end of the final round, PGA Professional Jake Narro was able to pull away from the tightly-contested field during the first playoff hole to win the 2014 Gulf States PGA E-Z-GO Section Championship held at Metairie Country Club in Metairie, La on Monday, September 22 and Tuesday, September 23.

Narro, PGA Assistant Professional at the Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, set the tone early by shooting an impressive first round score of 68 highlighted by 7 birdies.

“I was really, really happy with 68,” said Narro. “I had a little local knowledge going for me, having worked here in ’97.”

Narro experienced more bogeys and less birdies during the second round, allowing for the competition to close in on his lead. PGA Head Professional Cliff Bailey of Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss. and PGA Teaching Professional Tim Yelverton of Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss. tied everything up with Narro finishing at 139 and joined him in the playoff that would eventually name Narro the champion in a decisive one hole match.

“It’s great for our Section to be here, to be able to come to a facility like Metairie Country Club and be able to play,” said Narro. “The golf course was fantastic, in really good shape. My good friend Andy Alexander is out there doing a great job. David (Marchand) and his staff really took care of us yesterday. And of course, as always, the Nelsons make this event happen. We really, as a group, love that Ben Nelson Golf & Utility Vehicles (E-Z-GO) has been and continues to be our title sponsor of this event.

“I hope they understand how much they mean to us, it’s tremendous,” said Narro of the Nelson family. “I grew up playing golf with Benji as a kid so it’s close to me in many, many ways. Very appreciative to have them here.”

This marks Narro’s sixth E-Z-GO Section Championship victory, surpassing the current record of five which Narro held along with fellow GSPGA member Ed Selser, PGA. Narro previously claimed the title in 2000, 2002, 2008, 2011, and 2012.

With his win, Narro has earned an exemption into the 2015 Zurich Classic of New Orleans being held at TPC Louisiana on April 20-26, 2015.

The Gulf States PGA Section wishes to thank Ben Nelson, Benji Nelson and Russ Pitts of Ben Nelson Golf and Utility Vehicles and E-Z-GO for their tremendous support of this tournament and the Gulf States PGA. In addition, the Section thanks the PGA Tour for their supporting sponsorship as well as JJ O’Neill and Jason Lambert with Jani-King for sponsoring our putting contest. The Section also thanks the team at Metairie C.C. including host professional and PGA Director of Golf David Marchand, PGA, Lead PGA Assistant Professional Kyle Bachman, Superintendent Andy Alexander and Assistant Professionals Marie Stephens and Nic Ishee along with the rest of the staff for hosting a great event.
