Cooper wins GSPGA Professional Championship

COOPER’S FIRST-ROUND 66 PROPELS HIM TO VICTORY AT THE GULF STATES PGA PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Four Gulf States PGA Professionals Qualify for the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship

METAIRIE, La. –  Cory Cooper, PGA didn’t waste any time setting the stage for a victory at the Gulf States PGA Professional Championship shooting a first-round 66 that would ultimately secure him the Championship title and a place in the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship. This year’s tournament was contested at Tunica National Golf & Tennis in Tunica, Miss. over August 18-19, 2014.

Cooper, PGA assistant professional at New Orleans Country Club, said that despite an errant tee shot on the par-4 second hole, he played well and got off to a good start in the first round with a total of eight birdies.

“I rolled it well,” said Cooper of his success during the first day of competition. “I hit a lot of greens.”

At the conclusion of day one, he bested the field by five strokes, a cushion he was grateful for after shooting a 72 the following day.

“Today was the polar opposite from yesterday,” said Cooper of his play during the second round.  “I didn’t make as many birdies.  I made a lot more mistakes.  I bogeyed a couple par-5s.  Yesterday I birdied them all.”

In the end, Cooper’s final score of 138 (66-72) bettered that of 43 fellow members for the win.

PGA Professionals Reed Hughes of Senatobia, Miss. (74-69—143), Jake Narro of the Country Club of Louisiana (75-68—143) and Phil Schmitt of Schmitty Golf LLC (73-70—143) all tied for second place and will join Cooper at the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship.

The 48th PGA Professional National Championship presented by Club Car, Mercedes-Benz and OMEGA will be held at Philadelphia Cricket Club in Pennsylvania on June 28-July 1, 2015.
