METAIRIE, La. – PGA Professionals Russ Bloom and Jerry Covich have earned the honor of being named the 2014 Gulf States PGA Page & Tuttle/Haas-Jordan Pro-Pro Champions after outshooting their fellow players at this year’s Section event held at Pelican Point Golf & Country Club in Gonzales, La. on May 18, 2014.
Forty-seven players gathered on this picture-perfect day, forming forty-seven determined teams looking to claim the win. However, it was the team of PGA General Manager Russ Bloom of The Oaks Golf Club and PGA Head Professional Jerry Covich of Hickory Hill Country Club that would take it all after earning a team score of 9-under-63. Bloom’s score of 68 combined with Jerry’s 71 set them atop the leaderboard at the end of the day.
Four teams trailed the winners by two strokes to tie for second at 7-under-65.
Bloom’s impressive round was highlighted by an eagle on the 13th hole where he hit driver, then 7-iron to ten feet before sinking the putt.
Covich built the momentum early in the round by birdieing three out of four holes to cap off the front nine.
“Russ and I were a late addition,” said Covich, who was pleasantly surprised by their victory. “At 66 years old, I am glad to be winning anything.
“The golf course was in great shape. Thanks to Andres Prieto and Phillip Wright for letting us come out to the event.”
Covich added, “We would like to thank Dan and Kitty Peoples for their continued sponsorship along with Page & Tuttle, Haas-Jordan, Brooks Brothers and Lorente.”
The Gulf States PGA Section wishes to thank the event sponsors, Dan and Kitty Peoples of Page & Tuttle and Haas-Jordan, as well as Lorente and Brooks Brothers for providing a first-class event to all who participated. The Section also thanks PGA General Manager Philip Wright and PGA Head Professional Andres Prieto along with the staff at Pelican Point Golf & Country Club for all of their help in preparing for this tournament.
