METAIRIE, La. – The Mississippi PGA team secured the Mackel Cup for the third year in a row after day two was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Mackel Cup, an event inspired by the late Frank Mackel who was known as the “godfather of golf” in New Orleans, was held at Metairie Country Club and New Orleans Country Club in Louisiana on January 12-13, 2014.
Captained by Steven Driggers, the winning team of Kevin Kelly, Marshall Saxon, Buck Matheny, Matt Brunetz, David Lee, Tim Yelverton, Jon Howell, Tim Basel, Anthony Price, Olly Thomson, and Lee Brannan finished the shortened event on top with a total score of 10-8 points.
This year’s Louisiana PGA team, captained by J.T. Crawford, consisted of Ron Stromeyer, Justin Mann, Obie Agbasi, Phillip Wright, Tyler Kuhn, Cory Cooper, Neal Ajubita, Andres Prieto, Clayton Wood, David MArchand, Gamon Manne, and Reg Adams.
The players for each team were determined by the Chapter Player of the Year Points standings. The teams participated in fourball matches during the first day of the event held at Metairie Country Club, followed by singles matches on the final day of competition at New Orleans Country Club if the weather cooperated. One point was awarded for winning each 9 as well as the top overall score, with a possible total of three points per day.
